Education and Youth Programs
Protecting You/Protecting Me is MADD’s innovative alcohol-use prevention curriculum for children in grades 1-5. Research shows that the risk for alcohol and other drug use skyrockets when children enter the sixth grade, between the ages of 12 and 13. To be effective in preventing alcohol use by teenagers, we must reach out to and educate children before the risk appears. Learn more about this program. Click here
UMADD: is MADD’s college effort put into one centralized group on College Campuses. UMADDs are group established by College Students, faculty, and Law Enforcement officers that seek to educate and inform the students of the college about the dangers of drunk driving and prevent underage drinking. Zero Tolerance: MADD has a Zero Tolerance position on Underage Drinking. We believe that allowing underage drinking sends a message to our youth that breaking the law is ok as long as they don’t break certain laws. That is not the case. The younger a person is when they take their first drink of alcohol, the higher the chance they will become dependent and heavy drinkers as adults. The Zoo: The Zoo DVD Class Pack is designed for classroom use with students in grades 3-5. This interactive and entertaining prevention resource engages students in either an intimate setting or in a larger group setting. It provides students with the tools they need in order to say no to alcohol and to notify a trusted adult if someone offers them alcohol. The program also includes entertaining music and movie clips. The facilitator’s guide included in the kit helps the teacher or instructor further engage the students in the lessons learned, as well as forward important information to parents about underage drinking. Social Host: Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) believes that underage drinking is not just a youth problem. It is also very much an adult problem. With adults who purchase alcohol for those under age 21; look the other way when teens talk about their drinking exploits; and host teenage drinking parties in their homes, many communities struggle to prevent underage drinking. Holding adults responsible for underage drinking parties is a pro-active step for concerned communities but can be difficult. Law enforcement officials are typically not able to determine who provided the alcohol when they arrive on the scene of a teenage drinking party. Therefore, laws that prohibit furnishing alcohol to youth under 21 years old can be hard to enforce. Social host ordinances give communities a practical tool for holding adults accountable. These laws allow law enforcement to cite the individual who hosted the underage drinking party on their property. More than 150 cities or counties and 24 states have adopted social host ordinances.
